The Medicine Cabinet--Stomach flu and then some: Norovirus comes home to roost: Part One

I don't know who names these trouble-makers, but at least this one is easy to remember.  And doesn't sound very positive, so here we are. Severe gastrointestinal inflammation, aching, headache, low grade fever, nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea. For up to three days (does 60 hours sound better than 3 days?)

THE CATCH HERE IS IF YOU HAVE IT YOU ARE CONTAGIOUS FOR UP TO 2 DAYS BEFORE YOU COME DOWN WITH IT AND UP TO TWO DAYS AFTER YOU ARE NO LONGER "SYMPTOMATIC."  That is up to ONE WEEK'S worth of spreading these germs if you are a carrier. 21 million  Americans are carriers every years.

I am posting this today because I am a carrier right now, and am avoiding all human contact for two more days so I can sit here and tell YOU all about how to not get this or what to do if you think you are exposed. When I say "think" I mean if you even REMOTELY guess that MAYBE you MIGHT  be.

Pre-schools, elementary schools, colleges, residential facilities, healthcare facilities are prime targets for the fast spread of this highly contagious virus.

If you need more facts about this all-too-common scourge, here is a link to the CDC info on it:

OK. Why are you reading this here on my blog?  So I can suggest some things to help you avoid or minimize your reaction to an exposure to norovirus.

1.  Start with never putting any thing--no not one potato chip into your mouth before washing your hands. This is cumbersome, but not as bad as 7 days of you know what. Hand sanitizers are becoming more convenient. We are talking here of  (of course) after you are in a bathroom for any reason and/or after you have touched anything that another person has been using (like elevator buttons, door knobs, I know, this is a lot to ask, but....)

2. Sleep and eat as fitting a person who wants to enjoy good health. In particular, if you start to think you might be exposed, avoid candy and sweets for a short fasting period. The fast is not for you but for the viruses who seem to REALLY like sweets even more than us, and get a great boost of energy from them. Who's cause do we want to aid?  This is a short time. Next week you can go back to the Snickers if you must.

3. AIRBORNE. an amazing combination that was developed by an elementary school teacher who kept catching everything her students came into her class room with. Great when flying on airplanes where there is NO  ventilation for hours also. (A place I forgot to add to the "where you can catch this list.")  Airborne is a fizzy thing when dropped into water. Fizzes, is sweet. It is an effective quick immune system booster. You may be invaded by the virus, but the Airborne will have the troops ready to deal with it from the beginning. This is the first thing I reach for when I know I have been exposed to anything in the germ category that I do not want to take me over for a day or a week.

There are several more important things I want you to know to help you deal with this modern mini-plague and I will follow up with those recommendations in Part 2.

4. Oh, did I forget to mention Rescue Remedy (see Rescue Remedy under LABELS) ? NO!  I am right now. If it is in your purse, glove compartment or medicine cabinet at home, grab it and start the regimen. It will strongly support all your systems against a full take-over of anything, including the norovirus.
